  • Realization of "GREEN" Dream?

    On August 29th, CNN published a coverage about the famous Car City—Houston, Texas, US, which read, “Houston may be a city built on the profits of oil and gas, but it has a green dream.”

    The dream is to create a city that is "more liveable, walkable and bikeable," according Laura Spanjian, the director of sustainability for Houston since 2010, when current Mayor Annise Parker was elected.

    For many years, Houston has been known as a hub producing large quantities of oil and gas. However, intensive drilling activities brought not only huge financial benefits, but also worrying environmental problems.

    As far as we all know, petroleum products help us do many things. We use them to fuel our airplanes, cars, and trucks, to heat our homes, and to make products like medicines and plastics. Though the life is made much easier, finding, producing, moving and using them can cause problems for our environment like air and water pollution. Many types of wastes are also generated by activities like drilling, production and accidental releases. All of these hazard human health and wildlife.

    Therefore, laws and regulations have been enforced by governments to help reduce the hazards and new technologies developed to help improve.

    After countless experiments and grueling struggle, KOSUN has invented a series of waste management solutions and relative solids control equipment.

    Take one as an example. KOSUN Mud/Gas Separator is an especially ideal equipment to be used when accidental release, kick or blowout is encountered. It is primarily used to separate the free gas from the drilling fluids, which may include toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide. In this way, not only the safety of drilling is ensured, but more possible air pollution is prevented as well.

    Besides, the series of waste management solutions launched by KOSUN is different from the conventional approaches in many ways. It was born by the integration of domestic and foreign waste management experience and methods as well as the consideration of drilling waste production process. The solution upholds the waste reduction at its source. It will purify the drilling fluids and take away the solids at the source by application of solids control system. Then dewatering of discharged waste, water treatment, water recycling and purifications will work altogether to minimize water content in waste and recycle the water. Afterwards, Hi-G Dryer and Vertical Centrifuge will continue with dewatering and solid-liquid separation to minimize waste disposal. At last, the discharged waste will be reasonably and effectively treated by means of solidification, biodegradation, thermal desorption and cuttings re-injection.   • KOSUN ZJ40DB Polar Rig Low-temperature Solids Control System Successfully Sent to Russia

    On Oct 17th, the ship loaded with KOSUN ZJ40DB Polar Rig Low-temperature Solids Control System left the harbour for Russia. The system will couple DS250 Mobile Orbit Rig produced by Italian WEI Company. The deal on KOSUN ZJ40DB Polar Rig Low-temperature Solids Control System is the second made with KOSUN after this Russian customer purchased its solids control system in 2007.

    KOSUN has finished with all the production and assembly of equipment in early August since they settled the order and has passed the inspection from customers at the end of August.

    On Oct 10th, the Logistics and Document Department took a rapid move to organize and communicate with delivery crew on loading equipment on truck after they received delivery notice. By Oct 13th, all the equipment was assembled and ready for delivery to harbour on Oct 15th. KOSUN’s rapid and safe assembly won high commendation from Russian customers.

    ZJ40DB Polar Rig Low-temperature Solids Control System contains 5 mud tanks, one water tank, two diesel tanks and one MCC system. It can perform group drilling in 10 wells. NO.1 tank is set on rails with its end connected to oil cylinder which pulls NO.1 tank along the rails across wells every 5 meters for 50 meters. Besides, connecting pipes are also added between NO.1 and No.2 tank when the former travels in order to ensure the safety of system. No.1 tank features in host materials welded by Q345D low alloy steel so that it has large strength and resists low temperature well.

    What is more, this set of system is also coupled with polar heating system to include the whole system, its relative cable tanks and exposed steam pipelines under thermo shelf as drilling processes since Russia Siberia Luktoil Oilfield Block is located in polar region. It is also matched with polar steam heating system putting 2 steaming warmers atop each tank to collaborate with heating system to ensure a normal operation of the system under the terrible polar -45℃ condition in regions like Russia Siberia.

    The takeover between KOSUN and Russia’s second largest drilling company–Luktoil Oil Corp. of ZJ40DB Polar Rig Low-temperature Solids Control System succeeded the success of the deal with Gazprom on solids control system and its successful completion and delivery. Meanwhile, the two companies have appointed KOSUN as the only solids control equipment supplier in China. This means KOSUN’s business in Russian market has already entered the mature phase.

     

  • Greenpeace Campaign to Provoke Thoughts on Environmental Drilling

    Right after Mid September, it was reported on various major media that Russian coastguards boarded protest ship and arrested Greenpeace activists on September 19th, 2013.

    "The intruders" actions were of aggressive and provocative character and had the outward signs of extremist activity that can lead to people’s death and other grave consequences," the ministry said in a statement after Russian coastguards pre-warned the so-called extremist activists and arrested a couple of them from the Armsterdam-registered “Arctic Sunrise” ship which circled the Gazprom-backed Prirazlomnaya platform.

    However, the arrested party responded boldly against that, “Let’s be absolutely clear about this: the real threat to the Arctic comes not from Greenpeace but from oil companies like Gazprom that are determined…to drill in remote, frozen seas.”

    Which obviously would lead us to the possible environmental dangers caused by oil drilling and exploration.

    As we have all been made known that oil production has performed as a double-sided sword to our life, greatly benefiting us with its products on one hand and gradually ruining our living conditions on the other hand.

    Global warming, damaged soil and polluted water are all shooting warning signs that measures should be taken as soon as possible to lessen the perils. And the friction between Russia and Greenpeace also played a very thought-provoking, making every resource tapper to consider about related solutions.

    During the operation, KOSUN’ s solids control system which is connected directly onto mud pump would process drilling fluids via four phases, effectively recover them as much as possible and minimize the waste disposal. Thus the drilling mud is well recovered and waste disposal minimized. Meantime, the full use of dewatering solution on further waste management not only effectively recovers water resources, but also reduces both the water content and volume of discharged waste and well protects the environment. Then treated drilling mud can be directly put into use and discharged waste may experience further solid-liquid separation being transported into Hi-G Dryer and Vertical Centrifuge by propeller after dewatering process. On the other hand, removed water may be recycled after being treated in purification system. And the waste residues may turn very dry after coming out of Hi-G Dryer and Vertical Centrifuge. When they are processed again by means of solidification, biodegradation, thermal desorption and cuttings re-injection. In this way, zero waste disposal is realized.

    And the soluble high polymer flocculating solid particles in the mud is usually called chemical floeculant. The kind that even works effectively with bentonites and drill cuttings is total floeculant, with mere application in water drilling fluids for zero solid content. However, premium bentonite is not supposed to be removed by floeculants as a useful solid phase of drilling fluids. The experts developped a selective floeculant, frequently used in non-dispersed low solids drilling fluids, solely aimed at drill cuttings and coarse bentonite rather than premium bentonites.

    What is more, drill cuttings are mechanicallly and chemically fracked to particles on its way back to wellhead. Encapsulating agent encapsulates them so that the drill cuttings are kept large enough for easier mechanical and chemical removal when they get back to ground. Both encapsulating agent and floeculant are high molecular polymers. They usually are polyacrylamides, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamides and hydrolyzed polyacrylamides(HPAM).

    Ever since Mid September, Russia has been making continuous headlines on www.reuters.com by its actions against protestors arrested at Prirazlomnaya oil platform—owned by the state-backed oil drilling company—Gazprom. Recently, they just released three Russian protestors on bail and the others were still remained behind bars. Why did these people protest though they would have predicted such an angry and uncompromising reaction from Russian govt? They were actually all from a environmental organization based in Netherland called Greenpeace. Russia’s drilling acts had engendered great concern among people about the possible environmental damages. Greenpeace protestors tried to stop them by attacking one of the platforms in its Arctic oil drilling field.

    The dispute between Russia and the organization caused sensation on a large scale. Many countries disapproved Russia’s reactions against the protestors, which has resulted in reputation crisis for itself worldwide.

    However, the point is we need to stop scratching the surface and see through disputes to discover what warning lessons hide exactly behind.

    Nature we subsist on is actually comprised by several significant ecosystems, like air, water and soil, and many tiny ones which help balance the development and growth of lives in it. They do not exist independently immune of affects from the others, but correlate with one another intimately. One damaged, the rest will not remain intact either.

Human burn coal, oil, crude, etc almost everyday at a very rapid speed. This is releasing carbon stored in the fuel into the atmosphere and upsetting the carbon cycle. When more carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere, it will lock more heat on the Earth’s surface, raising the global temperature. This phenomenon is called global warming. Statistics show that the global temperature has risen half a degree centigrade in the last century. If the trend is not curbed, by the year of 2100, the temp will increase another 1.4-5.8 celsius degrees, causing melting of glaciers and flooding of coastal cities.

    Impact on Water:

    Water pollution comes primarily from petroleum industries. The many causes of that include industrial emissions, oil spills, untreated waste water, substances discharged by vessels, substances carried to the sea by rivers and so on. All those exert severe damaging effects on water ecosystem. Not only will human not be able to drink wholesome and sanitary water, but also many marine animal species will perish since, if the bottom dwelling organisms like planktons die, the rest food chain will be broken.

    Impact on Soil:

    Soil pollution is mainly the consequence of poor waste management. Besides, accidental blowouts and spills destroy the natural forests. The soil has lost its fertility and will be no good for trees, crops and vegetable for decades. Therefore, human will face threats of food shortage and green cover loss and wildlife extinction.

People there seem to live in an unprecedented air pollution.

    It is truly impressive to see all the faces wearing masks on the streets. It is even more impressive to discover countless cancer villages scattered across the land. In Duying Village, Shenqiu County, Henan Province, an eight-person family was all diagnosed as having fatal cancers, fishes in river deformed by pollution and an annual 2000 deaths of cancers reported. The tombs established upon lives and tears really struck the eyes and roused the minds.

    In retrospect, we would find ourselves vexed by frequent headlined reports of extreme environmental pollution and accidents and touched to drop tears secretly by the tragedies resulted from pollution.

    However, the dropped tears are not able to wash away the heavy dirt. We paid very heavy price for the mistakes made in the past, but we should try to avoid that in the future. Economic development is important, sustainable development is even more important. Our “Chinese Dream” needs to be an “Ecological Dream”.
