    As various environmental protection regulations come into effect, Chinese government’s control over offshore and onshore drilling discharge is becoming more and more stringent. In active response to national environmental protection policies, KOSUN sets up “Xi’an Oil & Gas Drilling Waste Management Engineering Center”. On January 22, 2015, the center held a training on drilling waste management at KOSUN head office in Xi’an Hi-tech zone, China, which staff from International Business Department, Marketing Department, Technical Services Department and other related departments attended.

    At the end of February, 2015, Robert, product development manager of Martin Engineering Group, and two technical personnel paid a visit to Xi’an KOSUN Machinery Co., Ltd. 
     
    Mr. Robert watched the manufacturing process of shake shaker in KOSUN workshop and discussed technical details with our engineers. Martin mechanical engineers also raised different questions concerning processing technology of shale shaker steel structures, and received all replies from KOSUN engineers.

    At the symposium later, Mr. Robert said that Martin and KOSUN had a pleasant cooperation after both parties signing strategic cooperation agreement in September 2014 in Beijing. They pay this visit to learn more about KOSUN demands and hope for joint research & development and improvement of shale shakers with KOSUN technical team.     Guide: Drilling waste management is to treat the solids generated during drilling and finally meet environment protection and discharge standards in countries and regions locally. It can meet the requirement of unlanding treatment of drilling mud, effectively prevent environmental pollution, save drilling mud and reduce drilling cost.
     
    Drilling waste management is to treat the solids generated during drilling and finally meet environment protection and discharge standards in countries and regions locally. It can meet the requirement of unlanding treatment of drilling mud, effectively prevent environmental pollution, save drilling mud and reduce drilling cost. At present, there are many drilling waste management methods and devices with different treatment results.
     
    Drilling waste equipments is to treat drilling waste and effectively reduce oil and water content in drilling waste, thus meeting statutory drilling waste discharge standards. The key equipment commonly used for drilling cuttings is Cuttings Dryer and Hi-G dryer.
     
     
    KOSUN vertical cuttings dryer can effectively treat water-based, oil-based, and synthetic-based drilling fluids, generate fairly dry cuttings, reduce the cuttings discharge, recover expensive drilling fluids and improve drilling cost-effectiveness.
     
    VC-1000 cuttings dryer independently developed and manufactured by KOSUN features in mature performance and superior separation capacity. With top feed mode and built-in high speed centrifugal drum, it can achieve the maximum capacity of 60T/h, and OOC after treatment is below 5%. The recovered mud can be feeded into centrifuge for further treatment.

    Hi-G dryer can also be used to recover oil-based, water-based and synthetic-based mud from drilling cuttings. Different quantity of Hi-G dryers can be equipped based on the conditions at drilling sites.
     
    LS584-D Hi-G dryer independently developed and manufactured by KOSUN features in high G-force (adjustable), and superior screening and drying results. The screen frame tilt angle can be adjusted from -1° to +5° via AWD angle adjustment system while drilling. The liquid content on cuttings after treatment can reach 12%by weight at maximum, significantly reducing cost in drilling waste.

    Guide: At the beginning of 2015, after being approved by Xi’an Science & Technology Administration and Xi’an Finance Bureau, our company has formally finished the project establishment of “Xi’an Oil & Gas Drilling Waste Management Engineering Technology Research Center”, laying a solid foundation for KOSUN to carry out the “Zero Discharge” plan in drilling waste management market in China.
     
    At the beginning of 2015, KOSUN has further strengthened its talents team building, and has successfully established the “Xi’an Oil & Gas Drilling Waste Management Engineering Technology Research Center” (hereinafter referred to as “Research Center”). This Research Center is the only government-approved municipal engineering technology research center of drilling waste management technology in Shaanxi at present, devoting itself to popularizing drilling waste management technology nationwide, vigorously promoting the “Zero Discharge” implementation plan, and helping major oil companies to fulfill “Zero Discharge” environmental requirements.
     
    As early as in 2011, KOSUN stepped into specific techniques of drilling waste management.     Guide: With the establishment of “Xi’an Oil and Gas Drilling Waste Management Engineering Research Center”, KOSUN will have more opportunities to make great contributions to the drilling waste management in China. The most attractive content in a drilling waste management research report officially released by this research center is “zero discharge of drilling waste”.
     
     
    What is “zero discharge of drilling waste”?
     
    The conception “zero discharge of drilling waste” is generated relative to traditional drilling waste management mode. During the traditional drilling process, waste pit is built at the drilling site for drilling waste management. That is, drilling waste is discharged to the waste pit at ground level for next-stage treatment, or even directly buried. This traditional discharge mode causes serious pollution and great harm to the environment and human life; therefore, State Environmental Protection Administration of China made a formal legislation in January 2015 to put forward stricter requirements and standards for drilling waste management. The conception “zero discharge of drilling mud” emerges at the right moment. Some people also call it “zero discharge of drilling cuttings”.

    Why to achieve “zero discharge of drilling waste”?
     
    Waste drilling waste generated during drilling production process is a multi-phase stable colloidal suspended substance containing clay, weighting materials, various chemical agents, sewage, dirty oil and drilling cuttings. The main components bringing impacts to the environment are hydrocarbon, salts, various polymers, heavy metal ions, as well as impurities, asphalt and other modifiers in barite. The main environmental pollutants have characteristics of high COD, high BOD, high oils, high CI—, high pH values, high suspended solids and heavy metal salts, etc. If the pollutants are left in storage pool at the drilling site, they will cause adverse effects to the underground (surface) water and soil along with leakage and overflow of the storage pool, and endanger the surrounding ecological environment, or even cause pollution incident. As the national and local overall environmental requirements become increasingly stringent, environmental protection and management cannot be delayed even a moment and the task is arduous.
     
     
    How to achieve “zero discharge of drilling waste”?
     
    In view of the above situation, the chief engineer Mr. Zhang, the principal of Xi’an Oil and Gas Drilling Waste Management Engineering Research Center, told us that there are many effective drilling waste management methods at present, including Hi-G dryer, solidification, thermal desorption, cuttings dryer system as well as WBM dewatering method, etc.
     
    Above are main drilling waste management methods at home and abroad. The most common “zero discharge of drilling waste” management modes are management while drilling and centralized management.     Let’s recall a scene in America half a year ago:
    In the morning of May 5, 2014, the sky of Texas was as blue as usual. The workers from oil and gas drilling industry worldwide gathered in Houston Reliant Park, participating in the annual OTC grand gathering. Exhibition registration began at 8:00 am American south coast time. After information entry and registration, more than 90,000 visitors gradually entered various exhibition halls. At 8:15, the first regular bus carrying hundreds of industry experts drove up to Arena Center exhibition hall. At 8:30, the first batch of exhibitors entered the exhibition hall, stopping at the booth of “Kosun Solids Control Equipment Inc.” to witness the first appearance of Black Rhino series products in global oil equipment industry.

    Black Rhino series products are the high-end solids control equipment launched in North America market after 10-year research and development over its accumulation for 23 years. In 2014, a well-known American test agency in solids control equipment industry and KOSUN worked together to conduct a trial on several Black Rhino VFD centrifuges, shale shakers and screw pumps for six consecutive months on two drilling rigs in Oklahoma Hama Block. The whole trial proceeded while drilling. Such equipment successfully passed the assessment of the test agency, and was recognized and praised by the first party.

    On the same day when Black Rhino equipment passed the trial, the first party signed a purchase contract, marking that Black Rhino equipment verified in American market would come into service at North American drilling site. Meanwhile, the test agency issued a test report to KOSUN for the successful trial. We will show you the contents of test report in the next volume, and reveal the trial details. Black Rhino equipment ordered by the first party is on the way to KOSUN Houston warehouse, and the other equipment has been ordered by a famous drilling company.

    “Body is the physical capital of revolution!” Enterprise’s development is not only inseparable to the staff’s hard work, but also to the staff’s healthy body.     At the beginning of this meeting, KOSUN administration manager stated the necessity of the meeting, and invited the technicians from China Council for Promotion of Environmental Health and Sanitary Safety to explain the first aid knowledge to employees. At first, Miss Li, the main technician, explained in detail some first aid knowledge, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, artificial respiration, electric shock self-help and mutual-assistance, etc. Her lively and vivid explanation attracted everyone’s attention. She also practiced most rescue actions and communicated with the staff frequently, helping everybody to remember the rescue procedures clearly.
