  • China Begins to Seriously Fight Pollution

Chinese people have witnessed a dozen of smoggy days after stepping into a new year. Chinese government finally began to take serious measures to fight against the “pollution monster”.

In the recent years, China has been claiming more recognition and reputation as an emerging economy, whose wing-footed development truly stunned its neighbors and some century-old world dominants. However, its speed is too fast to allow itself a stop to  sometimes have a look at how the landscape has transformed alongside.

From who-knows-what time, the air we inhale and exhale has started to contain more elements which we call dust or sand in its molecular structure. People has felt it more and more difficult to breath with such. Besides, the rivers turned foul and filthy too without much possibility to see to its bottom as before, leading to an everyday occurrence of horrible sight of dead fish bodies floating along with the dirty foams on the river surface. What is more, the installed tags in gated communities no longer produce any crystal-clean water but some yellowish mixture of liquid and sand.

Discovery of “Cancer Villages” even deepened people’s fear.

Therefore, Chinese government decided to set up a network to monitor air pollution nationwide in 17 provinces. Some experts even had suspicions that kitchen cooking should also be blamed for the emission of PM2.5 into air and called for Beijing citizens to improve on that.

In September, Beijing unveiled a five-year air pollution control plan in which the city decided to fine any violator of the rule above 1 million yuan.

The industrial factories and some oil companies are also doing their bits. Take a solids control manufacturing company in Xi’an as an example. Xi’an KOSUN Machinery Co., Ltd. was established by Mr. Geng Zhonghou after Premier Deng Xiaoping made the speech in his South China tour. It has launched a new set of environmental solutions by integration of experience accumulated in oil industry, several phases of grueling development and consistent research in advanced technologies.

This solution is able to reduce the waste at its source by using solids control equipment to purify mud and separate solids at the source; dewatering the discharged waste to minimize its water content, conduct water treatment and recycling; utilizing Hi-G shale shaker and vertical cuttings dryer for further dewatering and solid-liquid separation to minimize the waste discharge; and applying solidification, biodegradation, thermal desorption and cuttings reinjection to the discharged waste for a reasonable and effective treatment on the drilling waste.

  • Realization of "GREEN" Dream?

On August 29th, CNN published a coverage about the famous Car City—Houston, Texas, US, which read, “Houston may be a city built on the profits of oil and gas, but it has a green dream.”

The dream is to create a city that is "more liveable, walkable and bikeable," according Laura Spanjian, the director of sustainability for Houston since 2010, when current Mayor Annise Parker was elected.

For many years, Houston has been known as a hub producing large quantities of oil and gas. However, intensive drilling activities brought not only huge financial benefits, but also worrying environmental problems.

As far as we all know, petroleum products help us do many things. We use them to fuel our airplanes, cars, and trucks, to heat our homes, and to make products like medicines and plastics. Though the life is made much easier, finding, producing, moving and using them can cause problems for our environment like air and water pollution. Many types of wastes are also generated by activities like drilling, production and accidental releases. All of these hazard human health and wildlife.

Therefore, laws and regulations have been enforced by governments to help reduce the hazards and new technologies developed to help improve.

Xi’ an KOSUN Machinery Co., Ltd. ( KOSUN ), as the pioneer in the field of solids control in China as well as an integrated service supplier of global drilling fluid solids control and waste treatment, has always diverted energy and investment into the research and development of latest environmental solutions fit for oil drilling and exploration.

After countless experiments and grueling struggle, KOSUN has invented a series of waste management solutions and relative solids control equipment.

Take one as an example. KOSUN Mud/Gas Separator is an especially ideal equipment to be used when accidental release, kick or blowout is encountered. It is primarily used to separate the free gas from the drilling fluids, which may include toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide. In this way, not only the safety of drilling is ensured, but more possible air pollution is prevented as well.

Besides, the series of waste management solutions launched by KOSUN is different from the conventional approaches in many ways. It was born by the integration of domestic and foreign waste management experience and methods as well as the consideration of drilling waste production process. The solution upholds the waste reduction at its source. It will purify the drilling fluids and take away the solids at the source by application of solids control system. Then dewatering of discharged waste, water treatment, water recycling and purifications will work altogether to minimize water content in waste and recycle the water. Afterwards, Hi-G Dryer and Vertical Centrifuge will continue with dewatering and solid-liquid separation to minimize waste disposal. At last, the discharged waste will be reasonably and effectively treated by means of solidification, biodegradation, thermal desorption and cuttings re-injection. Thus, the goal of zero disposal is achieved and the dream of “green cities” realized.

  • Greenpeace Campaign to Provoke Thoughts on Environmental Drilling

Right after Mid September, it was reported on various major media that Russian coastguards boarded protest ship and arrested Greenpeace activists on September 19th, 2013.

"The intruders" actions were of aggressive and provocative character and had the outward signs of extremist activity that can lead to people’s death and other grave consequences," the ministry said in a statement after Russian coastguards pre-warned the so-called extremist activists and arrested a couple of them from the Armsterdam-registered “Arctic Sunrise” ship which circled the Gazprom-backed Prirazlomnaya platform.

However, the arrested party responded boldly against that, “Let’s be absolutely clear about this: the real threat to the Arctic comes not from Greenpeace but from oil companies like Gazprom that are determined…to drill in remote, frozen seas.”

Which obviously would lead us to the possible environmental dangers caused by oil drilling and exploration.

As we have all been made known that oil production has performed as a double-sided sword to our life, greatly benefiting us with its products on one hand and gradually ruining our living conditions on the other hand.

Global warming, damaged soil and polluted water are all shooting warning signs that measures should be taken as soon as possible to lessen the perils. And the friction between Russia and Greenpeace also played a very thought-provoking, making every resource tapper to consider about related solutions.

KOSUN, as the pioneer in the solids control field of China as well as an integrated service supplier of global drilling fluids solids control and waste treatment, has established a reasonable waste management system after years’ efforts and experience in the field.

The system is aimed at nipping the problem in the bud. The self-designed solids control equipment would efficiently reduce the amount of waste at its source at first.

Field picture of KOSUN solids control system

During the operation, KOSUN’ s solids control system which is connected directly onto mud pump would process drilling fluids via four phases, effectively recover them as much as possible and minimize the waste disposal. Thus the drilling mud is well recovered and waste disposal minimized. Meantime, the full use of dewatering solution on further waste management not only effectively recovers water resources, but also reduces both the water content and volume of discharged waste and well protects the environment. Then treated drilling mud can be directly put into use and discharged waste may experience further solid-liquid separation being transported into Hi-G Dryer and Vertical Centrifuge by propeller after dewatering process. On the other hand, removed water may be recycled after being treated in purification system. And the waste residues may turn very dry after coming out of Hi-G Dryer and Vertical Centrifuge. When they are processed again by means of solidification, biodegradation, thermal desorption and cuttings re-injection. In this way, zero waste disposal is realized.

The set-out solution will in the future act as a goal for which KOSUN people will pull every strength to achieving, thus forcing the pollution problems to give the way to green drilling.

  • Discover the Uniqueness in Chemical Precipitation

Chemical precipitation, one of the many solids control solutions, is also endowed with some unique features.

Put simply, it is to inject tint of chemical settling agent, and its close touch with dispersed infinitesmal drill cuttings flocculate them to bigger particles and quickly settle them.

And the soluble high polymer flocculating solid particles in the mud is usually called chemical floeculant. The kind that even works effectively with bentonites and drill cuttings is total floeculant, with mere application in water drilling fluids for zero solid content. However, premium bentonite is not supposed to be removed by floeculants as a useful solid phase of drilling fluids. The experts developped a selective floeculant, frequently used in non-dispersed low solids drilling fluids, solely aimed at drill cuttings and coarse bentonite rather than premium bentonites.

What is more, drill cuttings are mechanicallly and chemically fracked to particles on its way back to wellhead. Encapsulating agent encapsulates them so that the drill cuttings are kept large enough for easier mechanical and chemical removal when they get back to ground. Both encapsulating agent and floeculant are high molecular polymers. They usually are polyacrylamides, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamides and hydrolyzed polyacrylamides(HPAM).

  • Petroleum Industry’s Impacts on Environment

Ever since Mid September, Russia has been making continuous headlines on www.reuters.com by its actions against protestors arrested at Prirazlomnaya oil platform—owned by the state-backed oil drilling company—Gazprom. Recently, they just released three Russian protestors on bail and the others were still remained behind bars. Why did these people protest though they would have predicted such an angry and uncompromising reaction from Russian govt? They were actually all from a environmental organization based in Netherland called Greenpeace. Russia’s drilling acts had engendered great concern among people about the possible environmental damages. Greenpeace protestors tried to stop them by attacking one of the platforms in its Arctic oil drilling field.

The dispute between Russia and the organization caused sensation on a large scale. Many countries disapproved Russia’s reactions against the protestors, which has resulted in reputation crisis for itself worldwide.

However, the point is we need to stop scratching the surface and see through disputes to discover what warning lessons hide exactly behind.

Nature we subsist on is actually comprised by several significant ecosystems, like air, water and soil, and many tiny ones which help balance the development and growth of lives in it. They do not exist independently immune of affects from the others, but correlate with one another intimately. One damaged, the rest will not remain intact either.

Over years, oil exploration activities have brought large-scale pollution and contamination. Many types of waste are generated by oil drilling, production, stimulation, gas processing and accidental releases. Alll these hazard human life and wildlife.

    Impact on Air:

Fast human development also brings along high demands for faster transportation. To meet these demands, petroleum activities are more intensified, bringing about enormous pollution. Human burn coal, oil, crude, etc almost everyday at a very rapid speed. This is releasing carbon stored in the fuel into the atmosphere and upsetting the carbon cycle. When more carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere, it will lock more heat on the Earth’s surface, raising the global temperature. This phenomenon is called global warming. Statistics show that the global temperature has risen half a degree centigrade in the last century. If the trend is not curbed, by the year of 2100, the temp will increase another 1.4-5.8 celsius degrees, causing melting of glaciers and flooding of coastal cities.

    Impact on Water:

Water pollution comes primarily from petroleum industries. The many causes of that include industrial emissions, oil spills, untreated waste water, substances discharged by vessels, substances carried to the sea by rivers and so on. All those exert severe damaging effects on water ecosystem. Not only will human not be able to drink wholesome and sanitary water, but also many marine animal species will perish since, if the bottom dwelling organisms like planktons die, the rest food chain will be broken.

    Impact on Soil:

Soil pollution is mainly the consequence of poor waste management. Besides, accidental blowouts and spills destroy the natural forests. The soil has lost its fertility and will be no good for trees, crops and vegetable for decades. Therefore, human will face threats of food shortage and green cover loss and wildlife extinction.

Even so, we have to admit we cannot do without petroleum penetrating into all aspects of our daily life. We use them to cook food, to fuel the vehicles, to heat our homes, to make products like medicines and plastics and so on. However, every sword has two blades, when we are benefiting from petroleum, it is also producing hazards for us. We should all stand up together against the contamination while keeping our life going on by means of technological inventions, innovations and scientific advances.

  • A Green Hope

Along with the refreshing wind come whiffs of sweet fragrances; chrysanthemums covered with mist represent clusters of blooms.

October sees the 64th anniversary of our mother country, for which red flags are put up flying high over our spectacular landscape and festivities put on across the nation.

Our motherland so rich in beauty has made her sons and daughters so passionate towards her. 64-year grueling development has brought the Republic up as a gigantic dragon, whose soaring raised those proud eyes towards the East. The collective “Chinese Dream” composed of hundreds of millions Chinese people’s dreams is coming true bit by bit.

“Chinese Dream” is a road to rejuvenate and a road to pursue our own individual dream.

We never stopped on the road to pursue our own dream and had been working upon it days and nights. At last, our efforts had produced golden ears out of wheats. However, when we were still immersed in the happy celebration of harvest, we suddenly noticed that our once beautiful landscape had been stained and maimed with contamination.

Our sights are veiled by heavy smog. At the early beginning of this year, smoggy weather hit a wide range of China. January saw 5 heavily smoggy days in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province and only 4 sunny days. Beijing, thus, is now the new “Smoggy City” to Chinese people. While on March, 3.3 smoggy days can be counted, 1.1 more days than the average in the same period of past years, hitting the record-high of these 52 years. Suddenly, everyone panicked, at the threats caused by smoggy weather. And in many cities, the masks and eyedrops were sold out. Statistics said over 80 millions people were seriously affected this year, especially citizens from the most populated regions like, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei Province, Pearl River Delta, Yangtse River Delta. People there seem to live in an unprecedented air pollution.

It is truly impressive to see all the faces wearing masks on the streets. It is even more impressive to discover countless cancer villages scattered across the land. In Duying Village, Shenqiu County, Henan Province, an eight-person family was all diagnosed as having fatal cancers, fishes in river deformed by pollution and an annual 2000 deaths of cancers reported. The tombs established upon lives and tears really struck the eyes and roused the minds.

In retrospect, we would find ourselves vexed by frequent headlined reports of extreme environmental pollution and accidents and touched to drop tears secretly by the tragedies resulted from pollution.

However, the dropped tears are not able to wash away the heavy dirt. We paid very heavy price for the mistakes made in the past, but we should try to avoid that in the future. Economic development is important, sustainable development is even more important. Our “Chinese Dream” needs to be an “Ecological Dream”.

Ever since 1992, KOSUN has followed China’s reform and opening-up footprints for 21 years and has grown up to be a robust young man when radical transformation is going on in China nowadays.

Chinese people has been working on their individual dreams in different ways all these 21 years. KOSUN has also been drawing her own dream on the blueprint, regarding environmental protection as the basis for corporate development whether in case of the solids control system construction or waste management system establishment.

China is still advancing and we’ve been following her footprints in the pursuit of dreams all the time. We get touched when she is in bloom and get sad when she is on the brink of environmental dangers.

Facing the future, we’ll still stick to our own dreams to keep our land green and to guard our hopes.

  • Lawmakers Offer New Plan to Curb Gas, Oil Price Volatility

In a move supported by both the New England Fuel Institute and the Petroleum Marketers Association of America ( as part of an association of over 250 groups ) new legislation has been introduced to solidly clamp down on the potential for excessive speculation in the oil markets. As noted by NEFI, the federal agency tasked with regulating the commodity derivatives already has broad authority to impose speculation limits under last year’s new Wall Street Reform Law. The CFTC is expected to vote on a final rule on October 4, after an eight-month delay, but a leaked draft of the proposed rules shows them to be watered down and regulators do not plan on imposing aggregate limits on speculation as a class of trader-a major priority for NEFI.

Lawmakers Offer New Plan to Curb Gas, Oil Price Volatility

Bill Nelson ( D-FL ) and U.S. Rep Peter Welch ( D-VT ) and a handful of other lawmakers late yesterday filed a legislation on Sept 21st that aims to drastically limit the ability of speculators to artificially drive up energy prices. Nelson was joined by Sens. Jay Rockefeller ( D-WV ), Bernard Sanders ( I-VT ) and Richard Blumenthal ( D-CT ) who co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill. U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro ( D-CT ) joined Welch on the House version.

Under the legislation, no single investor could hold more than 5 percent of the oil futures market thereby greatly reducing speculators ability to manipulate prices. And because more speculators have jumped into the oil flipping business, the bill caps the overall level of speculation in the market at its average over the most recent 25 years. The lawmakers say that could reduce present day levels of speculation by more than half.

  • How to Dispose Waste in the Domestic Drilling Industry?

At present, environmental protection is a basic state policy in China, and it has been a strategic mission and goal for our country to maintain a sustainable development of society, economy and environment. Along with the continuous improvement of environmental laws and the increasing environmental awareness among people, the departments concerned have successively enacted various environmental protection regulations to impose stringent limitations on waste discharge during well drilling and well completion.

During the process of oil exploration and production, a large amount of waste is usually left at well sites, which is kept in sewage pits. However, the poorly treated solid waste may have a bad effect on underground water and surface water, endanger the surrounding ecological environment and even cause pollution accidents when sewage pits leak, overflow or are inundated due to rain wash during the rainy season. Therefore, it is now a very important task for oilfield enterprises to take relevant waste management techniques to fight against the harmful waste and reduce its harm to environment to the greatest extent possible.

In recent years, although domestic onshore oil and gas regions have devoted great efforts to management of waste generated in well drilling and well completion, the techniques still remain too inefficient to dispose waste thoroughly. Nowadays, domestic and foreign waste management solutions differ greatly in technological solutions, supporting equipment and environmental investments.

Most domestic oilfields have been directly solidifying the waste in sewage pits after well drilling and well completion. When the waste in sewage pits falls into clear liquid and sludge by natural sedimentation under the effect of gravity, drain the upper clear liquid less than 1/3 of the total, and then directly add curing agent into the remaining sludge for solidification. Since the waste to be disposed contains much water and consumes lots of chemical agents, the solution costs much, achieves unsatisfactory results and fails to completely eliminate pollution risks.

Facing local governmental requirements on environmental protection, domestic onshore oilfields now attach more and more importance to harmless drilling waste management and as a result, the disposal technology with solid-liquid separation as its core is applied to the drilling waste management, which replaces the out-dated direct solidification with the process integrating chemical method, solid-liquid separation and solidification method.

Solid-liquid separation is a key link in drilling fluid treatment. The more water you eliminate from waste, the less solids you get and the less money you pay. In this way, the disposal cost will be effectively controlled and more economic benefits will be obtained. Over the years, such dewatering equipment as orifice filter press, filter belt dewatering conveyor and decanter centrifuge have been developed successively in China, facilitating the disposal of drilling waste.

This solution proceeds as follows: natural sedimentation happens to sewage pits, free water produced by natural sedimentation undergoes routine sewage treatment, the sludge is chemically destabilized by flocculant and coagulant aid, centrifuge, filter belt dewatering conveyor or orifice filter press further separates solids and liquid, and finally the separated solids and liquid will be solidified and treated respectively. For this solution, the dewatering equipment is still on trial and yields lower efficiency for its low degree of automation.

Therefore, high efficiency relies on both reducing waste at the source and disposing waste during drilling. By combining overseas advanced experience with domestic practical drilling conditions, Xi’an KOSUN Machinery Co., Ltd., as a manufacturer of oil drilling-production equipment and solids control equipment, has customized an integrated drilling waste management solution for customers.

The solution begins with the source and consists of the following four steps: solid control equipment – dewatering/water treatment/water recycling/filtration – mud recovery – stabilization/biodegradation/thermal desorption/cuttings reinjection.

In the process of drilling, KOSUN Solids Control System directly connects to the outlet of mud pump, performs four-stage solids control treatment on the mud, effectively recovers mud as much as possible and minimizes the waste.

The mud treated by solids control equipment can be directly put into use, and the dewatered waste can be directly delivered by conveyor to Hi-G shale shaker and vertical cuttings dryer for further solid-liquid separation. The separated water can be recycled after being treated by purifying equipment. The waste residues become very dry after being treated by Hi-G shale shaker and vertical cuttings dryer, and can be finally disposed by means of solidification, biodegradation, thermal desorption and cuttings reinjection, by which the zero discharge of waste is achieved.

Compared with the first two solutions, this one starts to treat waste at the source, reduces the waste discharge, enhances the efficiency and saves much drilling cost. Meantime, the full use of dewatering solution on further waste treatment effectively recovers water resource, reduces water content in waste, shrinks waste volume and protects the environment well. The goal of zero waste discharge is realized through solidification, biodegradation, thermal desorption and cuttings reinjection of the remaining waste solids. Moreover, the application of solidification in onshore drilling and cuttings reinjection in offshore drilling meets the actual requirements at drilling sites, with stronger practicability and higher efficiency.
